Services & Schedule

The life of the Orthodox Christian is a life of prayer — and the parish exists to make that life possible, week by week, season by season. We warmly invite you to join us for any of our services. All are welcome.

Divine Liturgy

The Divine Liturgy is the heart of Orthodox Christian worship — the central act of the Church’s life, in which heaven and earth are joined and the faithful receive the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion.

At our parish, the Divine Liturgy is celebrated every Sunday morning, combining the traditions of the Byzantine rite with the warmth of our Romanian heritage. Services are conducted in both Romanian and English, so that every member of our community — whether born in Romania or raised here in Malta — may fully participate.

We celebrate the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom throughout most of the year, and the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great on select feasts and Sundays of Great Lent, according to the Orthodox liturgical calendar.

First-time visitors are always welcome. If you are new to Orthodox worship, simply come, pray as you are able, and allow the service to speak to your heart.

Confession

The Holy Mystery of Confession (also called Repentance or Reconciliation) is one of the seven Holy Mysteries of the Orthodox Church — a moment of healing, forgiveness, and restoration of the soul’s relationship with God.

Confession is available:

  • Before Sunday Divine Liturgy, during Orthros, by arrangement with Fr. George
  • By private appointment — parishioners are warmly encouraged to approach Fr. George directly to schedule a time that works for them

We encourage all faithful to approach Confession regularly as part of their spiritual life, particularly before receiving Holy Communion and in preparation for the major fasting seasons: Great Lent, the Apostles’ Fast, the Dormition Fast, and the Nativity Fast.

For those who are new to Confession or returning after a long absence — please do not hesitate. Fr. George is available to guide you gently through the process with patience and compassion.

Special Services

The Orthodox liturgical year is rich with services, blessings, and commemorations that sanctify every dimension of human life — from birth to burial, from the blessing of a home to the remembrance of the departed. Our parish offers the following:

🕯 Memorial Services (Parastas)

The Church prays for the faithful departed at every Divine Liturgy, but special Parastas (Memorial Services) are offered for individuals on specific commemorations:

  • 3rd day, 9th day, 40th day after repose
  • 6-month and 1-year anniversaries
  • Saturdays of Souls — special Saturdays throughout the year dedicated to prayer for all the departed, particularly during Great Lent

To request a memorial service, please contact Fr. George in advance.

🏠 House Blessings (Sfințirea Casei)

The blessing of a home is a beautiful Orthodox tradition, typically performed at Theophany (January 6th) or at any time a family moves into a new home or wishes to rededicate their household to God. Fr. George is available to visit your home for this service — please contact the parish to arrange a date.

💒 Holy Matrimony

The Mystery of Holy Matrimony joins a man and woman in a sacred bond blessed by the Church. Couples wishing to be married in the Orthodox tradition are asked to contact Fr. George well in advance — at least several months before the desired date — to allow for the necessary preparation, documentation, and pastoral meetings.

🕊 Holy Baptism & Chrismation

Baptism is the door into the life of the Church — the Mystery by which a person is born again in water and the Spirit and becomes a member of the Body of Christ. Both infants and adult converts may be received into the Church through Baptism and Chrismation. Please reach out to Fr. George to discuss preparation and scheduling.

✝️ Holy Unction (Sfântul Maslu)

The Mystery of Holy Unction is offered for the healing of body and soul — for the sick, the elderly, and for any of the faithful who seek God’s grace in times of suffering. It is traditionally celebrated communally during Holy Week, but may also be administered privately. Please contact Fr. George for arrangements.

⛪ Feast Day Celebrations

Our parish feast day is the Birth of Saint John the Baptist — June 23 — celebrated each year with a solemn Divine Liturgy followed by a joyful communal gathering. All parishioners, friends, and visitors are warmly invited.

We also celebrate all the Great Feasts of the Orthodox liturgical year with special services, including:

  • Nativity of Christ (December 25 / January 7)
  • Theophany (January 6 / 19)
  • Palm Sunday, Holy Week & Pascha (Easter)
  • Ascension, Pentecost, and the Dormition of the Theotokos (August 15)
