About Us

Welcome to the Romanian Orthodox Parish of Malta — a community of faith rooted in the ancient traditions of the Orthodox Church and shaped by the warmth of the Romanian spirit.

We are a diaspora parish serving the Romanian and Moldavian faithful living on the island of Malta, as well as mixed families, English-speaking Orthodox Christians, and anyone seeking the beauty of Orthodox Christian worship. Our parish falls under the Diocese of Italy, within the Metropolis of Western and Southern Europe, under the omophorion of the Patriarchate of Romania.

Our services are celebrated at St. Roque’s Church (Knisja ta’ San Rokku), St. Ursula Street, Valletta — a gracious 17th-century Baroque church offered to us by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Malta. We are deeply grateful for this fraternal act of Christian generosity, which allows us to worship freely in the heart of Malta’s historic capital.

Our Divine Liturgy is celebrated in both Romanian and English, so that every member of our community — whether born in Romania or raised here in Malta — may fully participate in the life of the Church.

Our History

The Romanian Orthodox community in Malta has grown alongside the broader Romanian diaspora that began settling on this small but welcoming island in the early 2000s. For many years, the faithful had limited access to regular liturgical life, gathering informally and without a permanent home.

The parish was officially established in 2014, marking a defining moment for the Romanian and Moldavian faithful on the island. Our priest, Fr. George Alexandru Popescu, first came to Malta on holiday, felt the call to serve the community here, and eventually settled permanently as a missionary pastor. His dedication transformed a scattered diaspora into a true parish family.

After a period of re-establishment, regular Sunday services resumed in 2019 with only a handful of faithful. Through God’s grace and the commitment of our community, our Sunday congregation has grown to approximately 70 worshippers — and continues to grow. Today, our feast day, the Birth of St. John the Baptist (June 23), is celebrated each year as a joyful gathering of the entire parish family.

Our Mission

Our mission is to be a living witness of Orthodox Christianity in Malta — serving our faithful, welcoming the stranger, and building bridges across communities.

We are committed to:

  • Nurturing the spiritual life of every parishioner through regular Divine Liturgy, sacraments, and personal pastoral care
  • Preserving Romanian Orthodox tradition and culture among our diaspora, so that future generations remain connected to their faith and heritage
  • Educating our youth through catechism classes that teach not only the Orthodox faith, but also Romanian history, language, and traditions — vital for children who have grown up in Malta
  • Promoting Christian unity as an active participant in Malta’s ecumenical dialogue; our parish priest serves as Chairman of the “Christians Together” Commission, working alongside other Christian denominations to advance mutual understanding and cooperation
  • Welcoming all — regardless of background or language — into a community built on love, prayer, and service

We believe that the Church is not only a place of worship, but a home. Whether you are Romanian, Maltese, or from anywhere in the world, you are welcome at our table.
